Porto Half-Day Historical Walking Tour

This half-day tour covers the main downtown highlights. Porto city is a museum itself. Every square, every street, every corner, have or lead you to something old, historical and beautiful!

Although hilly, the narrow alleyways of Porto are better on foot, and we’ll walk mostly descending which makes it way easier.

To fully understand the city, it’s past and even the beginning of Portugal as a country, taking a walk through the medieval quarter is the best way to know the ancient Porto.

Along the way, besides appreciating the unique mixture between a cosmopolitan and medieval city, we’ll visit some hidden gems such the most impressive completely-fully-covered-in-gold church of Porto!

Main landmarks to pass through are São Bento Train Station, Cathedral, Medieval Town, Allies Square, Clérigos Tower and Lello Bookshop, Luis I bridge Ribeira, the Unesco Heritage Site (where the tour ends).

Let me show you around. Let me share with you some inside stories and show you the simple beauty of Porto. I’ll make sure that you’ll leave with the will to return!

This tour takes between 3h and 3.5 hours.

After picking you up from your hotel, lodging or Leixões Cruise Ship Terminal, we’ll have a full day covering all: modern and ancient Porto, the neighbor city of Gaia to appreciate the views over Porto, the Port Wine cellars and Foz district.

We’ll explore the Old Quarter, including Cathedral and the medieval city, São Bento Train Station and get to know the meaning of the magnificent hand-painted tile panels and Ribeira, which is the heart of the Unesco Heritage.

Uptown, other highlights of our tour are the Allies Square and the City Hall, the Clérigos Tower, Lello Bookshop, Churches of Carmo and Carmelitas, the Jewish Corner and to the amazing viewpoint of Victoria.

For lunch, I will suggest a little place called Afurada, a small fishing village where you can have excellent options of fish or meat with a truly local environment.

A relaxed drive along the shore towards Foz district stopping at the lighthouse at the mouth of Douro river, drive through Brasil Avenue and passing the “Cheese Castle”, will complete your beautiful day.

Hands down the best Tour Guide we had during our stay in Portugal!

My daughter and I took a walking tour with Norberto Lopes Pinto in Porto. He was by far the best tour guide we had during our stay in Porto and Lisbon. He is very knowledgeable about the history of his Country. Whether it be architectural, political, or about local gems. His personality is warm and inviting, with a good sense of humor. He created the perfect balance of pointing something out and “moving on” and “staying still” to take in, and learn about about something of important interest. Having Norberto as our first guide raised the bar for each guide after him. A tough act to follow! We’re so thankful to have had him show us Porto. Highly recommended.

Norberto did a great job for our first day in Porto. He met us at the airport and gave us a combination driving tour and walking tour thru Porto. We went to the best overview sites for photographs from both sides of the river. Norberto was very knowledgeable in Porto and the Portuguese history.

Norberto is a wonderful guide and provided us with a delightful day in Porto that was interesting, educational and provided us with a real feel for the city. We would highly recommend Norberto.
